Supply List & Preparation Directions

"Will It Go Round in Circles" Class

at 2025 International Quilt Festival

in Houston, Texas

I will teach "Will It Go Round in Circles" at International Quilt Festival in Houston. Following are preparation directions and the supply list for the class. "Will It Go Round in Circles" will meet from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday, October 9, 2025. Enroll through Quilts, Inc.

To get the most out of this class, bring the completed quilt top (no circles) as shown in the cutting and assembly diagram below. If you can’t get this done, don’t worry. The goal of this class is for you to learn to inset circles and to add a narrow ¼” border around them. As an alternative to bringing the completed top, you can do one of the following:

  • Bring any quilt top into which you’d like to inset circles. Also bring the fabric you want to use for the circles and the ¼” narrow border around them. Bring 1 yard of the circle fabric and ½ yard of the border fabric.

  • Bring your focus fabric and the fabric you will use for the narrow ¼” border around the circles. With this option, you’ll learn how to add the narrow ¼”border around the circle, and you’ll have one or more of your circles ready to inset into your quilt when you do complete the top. Working with separate fabric provided by the Instructor, you’ll learn how to inset the circles.

With either of these options, you will learn what you need to know to finish this quilt.

A tip on piecing the quilt top: It is easy to gain or loose fractions of inches when you are piecing something with so many ¼” strips. I recommend you cut pieces for Unit 1 and stitch them together before cutting pieces for Unit 2 or other units. When you have Unit 1 pieced, measure it’s width. If you’re a bit wide, trim it. If you’re a bit narrow, no problem. Just make the strips in Unit 2 the width of your Unit 1. Join Units 1 and 2, then measure the length. Either trim the joined units to the length of the dark pink vertical piece (21¼”) or cut the dark pink vertical piece the length of your joined strips. Gaining or losing a bit of width and length isn’t a problem. Adding a strip that is longer or shorter than what you are joining it to can be a problem that will make it difficult to square up your quilt in the end. Continue working unit by unit in this fashion.

To avoid this problem, Dana foundation pieced the entire top other than the circles. If you’d like to do this, contact Dana at danaellenjones@gmail.com or 720-654-8430. She can get foundations to you. You must contact her by September 15 for this.

Supply List

Requirements are based on 40” fabric width. Borders and ¾” strips in the quilt top are cut lengthwise. Yardage for cutting the narrow strips for the ¼” strip is also provided for cutting these strips across the width of the fabric and piecing them. Borders include extra length for mitering the corners plus seam allowances. It is recommended you not cut your borders or binding strips until you have completed the rest of the quilt top. The quilt finishes at 45½” x 75½”.

Other Supplies:

  • Marking pencil or marker that will show up on your fabrics

  • 8 flat head pins. IBC flowerhead pins or Clover flowerhead pins for sewing fine/sheer fabrics. The recommended Clover pins are blue. The pink ones are too bulky. These pins are recommended because they are flatter and thinner than other flowerhead pins.

  • Thread snips

  • Seam ripper

  • Spray starch: Do not replace with sizing or wrinkle removing sprays.

  • Rotary cutter with fresh blade

  • Acrylic rulers: 8.5” x 24” if you have one or other 24” ruler.

  • Optional: Cut A Round tool if you own one. Instructor will have tools for you to use in class and will have them for purchase if you wish to take one home. Two sizes will be used: Standard and Large. These may be available from your local quilt shop. They are available from Phillips Fiber Art: http://phillipsfiberart.com

  • Optional: Stiletto if you like to work with one.

Recommended: Prewash your fabrics. Insetting circles is easier if your fabrics have been prewashed. Press your fabrics carefully so they are wrinkle free. Starch the fabric you will use for your circles and the narrow ¼” borders around them.
